Wedh Tajya Ghadamodincha/date: 24 Sept,Mumbai: In a groundbreaking initiative set to transform one of Mumbai’s most beloved institutions, IIFL Foundation and Waatavaran Foundation proudly came together to electrify the Mumbai Dabbawalas fleet. The Electric Bike Distribution Ceremony for Mumbai’s Dabbawalas was conducted on September 23, 2024, Dadar West. The event was presided over by Mr. Minesh Pimple, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, (Dept. of Environment and Climate Change), BMC, Mumbai.

The ceremony marked the launch of a sustainable mobility program aimed at equipping Mumbai’s famous lunch-box delivery personnel with 25 state-of-the-art electric bikes. This initiative not only modernises the 134-year-old dabbawala tradition but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of this essential service.

Some insights that underscore the importance of this initiative:
Mumbai Dabbawalas have been an integral part of the city’s fabric since 1890, delivering around 20,000 to 30,000 meals daily with minimal technology. A recent study conducted by Waatavaran Foundation revealed that 92% of Dabbawalas use cycles for their deliveries, making them one of the largest groups of livelihood cyclists in Mumbai. These Dabbawalas, with an average age of 42 years, have been serving for an average of 20 years, showcasing their dedication and the sustainability of their model. Interestingly, 63% of Dabbawalas travel more than 12 kilometres by cycle daily to deliver tiffins, highlighting their significant contribution to sustainable urban transport. The study also found that 78% of Dabbawalas appreciate cycling for its cost-effectiveness, while 53% value its ability to manoeuvre through traffic easily. However, challenges persist – 46% of Dabbawalas cite traffic as a major problem, and 26% struggle with the lack of safe parking spaces for their cycles. An overwhelming 89% of Dabbawalas expressed the need for separate cycle lanes, emphasising the importance of cycling infrastructure in our city.

Key Highlights of the Initiative:
– Distribution of 25 electric bikes to active dabbawalas
– Enhanced efficiency and reduced physical strain for dabbawalas
– Preservation of a cultural icon while embracing sustainable technology

Ms. Madhu Jain, Director of IIFL Foundation, stated, “The Mumbai Dabbawal’s model of the tiffin delivery is one of the oldest supply chains that works efficiently with all the sustainability practices and zero waste and carbon emissions.
